Unfortunately, you will not be rid of these problems while Ireland is being run by the people in power at the moment. They are what the Canadian author Pierre Berton termed 'THE SMUG MINORITY' ie the self-ordained Establishment who have somehow bamboozled the people into believing that 'they know best...' And even more unfortunately, the main body of voters appear to be split along lines drawn during the Civil War and know that their chosen people 'know best' - and they ain't a-gonna change. Like many of the TD's they are 3rd and 4th generation party hacks; schooled in pork-barrel politics; waiting for every grant and perk which comes down the road, and relying on the folks at the top to keep the status as quo as they can. People lose their passport - they don't call the Passport Office, they phone a TD. Can't get a licence - phone a TD. And the folks at the top - well, even though political shystering was exported to the United States in the XIX Century, enough remained at Home to keep the club going. For that's what it is - a Club. Meetings are held at the Cheltenham Gold Cup; The Irish Open; Galway Races; St. Patrick's Day in New York; better Dublin restaurants - anywhere where the Irish nobilty can be seen gathering for fun and frolic. They are'nt going to quit, and we don't have a Government that can make them, not the way they're acting now, anyway - and most of them being Club Members to boot,..So what Government could straighten this lot out? Well, lots of Ireland, no matter what the survery shows, ain't gonna Vote Labour. Not the farmers for sure, they've had their feet in the trough for too long to plonk for socialism. Nor are they very Green, being chiefly occupied with chainsawing live trees; festooning the hedgerows with black plastic; tossing old tyres onto brushpile fires, and whingeing over their slurry tank payments delayed... (something they ought to have done theirselves decades ago) So we are left with the same old dreary two parties. Both have a record of Government where corruption reared its financial and sometimes profitable head; they are pots calling each other's kettle black.(in the old sense of the word, please) And you might as well have asked Princess Margaret to turn in her tiara; or Geo W Bush to retire two years ago, as for this lot to 'do the right thing' to quote one of them. If enough of Ireland becomes enraged enough; and defiant enough; and thoroughly awfully pissed-off enough and has the balls to take that resolve to the ballot box (when it's opened) and not let up in the media, or the pub, or at the Church gates, or at the GAA ground, or wherever the victims gather; then we may, just may, have a chance. (as long as they have the strength of will to ignore how Da voted)
